I started writing Welcome to Arroyo’s in 2001 at NYU. It was my thesis reading in the fall of 2002. I workshopped it in 2003 at South Coast Repertory’s Hispanic Playwrights Project. From there, it went on to The Lark’s Playwrights’ Week, followed by a Barebones production at The Lark with the Hip-Hop Theater Festival (and a few performances at Queens Theater in the Park thrown in for good measure. The following summer, it was performed at the Summer Play Festival. There was lots of talk about a full production for the piece, and a deal was reached to bring it to Austin’s State Theater in 2006 — but that fell apart due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control.
And so the play sat.
No one would commit to producing it.
And my life, without exaggeration, was much sadder for it.
And now…it’s coming back to life.
And man. It’s going to be good.
